Update on the CalWORKs Car Repair Program

Eligible CalWORKs customers have a new source to help pay for necessary car repairs. Mary Ellen Haley reports that this new program is now up and rolling! Case managers should receive their instructions on how to process requests for vehicle repairs this week or early next week.

How does it work?
Customers need to talk to their case managers about the new program and ask them to issue a Request for Vehicle Repair Form SC 1787 if they need assistance with their vehicle. Case managers will be able to approve repair costs up to $750. Costs over $750 needs supervisor approval. There doesn't seem to be a cap on these charges -- however, the repairs must:
· Provide necessary maintenance for the vehicle, and/or
· Be necessary for the vehicle to remain operable.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible, interested customers are required to have the following items in their name:
· valid drivers license
· car insurance
· registration
They must get 2 estimates for the repairs -- however if the vehicle is not operable, only one estimate is needed.

What repairs can be made?
Some of the repairs that are covered include:
· Windshields
· Oil change
· Tires upgrade
· Brakes
· and other repairs

Body Work or upholstery is not covered.

Please spread the word about the new program - another way to improve transportation to help get to work! Remember, the GRHP is available for enrolled CalWORKs customers while their vehicle is being repaired. Encourage them to enroll!
